I have an L C Smith Hunter Arms shotgun, serial number 53076 12 gauge double with double triggers and side cocking hammers. We just found a Hunter Arms Co. Smith 12 gauge shotgun. It is a double barrel with a number of 175546 with a F under it.
- Sep 05, 2009 The one in question is a 12 gauge Shotgun. Stamped on it are 'THE FULTON', 'HUNTER ARMS CO INC MFRS', 'PAID FEB 7-191' and the serial number in a few places is 369XX.
The Hunter Arms Co. was founded in 1891 to manufacture the famous L.C. Smith shotguns and continued until 1945 when its assets were acquired by the Marlin Firearms Co. The company began as Hunter & Comstock Arms Co in 1888. In 1915 Hunter Arms Co. began producing and marketing their own line of shotguns, the first of which was the Fulton model. These guns were originally considered to be cheap or inferior boxlocks compared to the L.C. Smith sidelock shotguns. However, it turns out that these inexpensive boxlocks were equal in quality to the field grade Smiths. The receivers, forend, trigger guard and triggers were all machined from forgings. The Hunter models exhibit excellent quality and durability. They were manufactured in 20, 16, 12 ga. & .410 bore with barrel lengths of 26, 28, 30 & 32 in.
Smith Shotguns. And Hunter Arms Co. Was established to manufacture the equally famous L.C. Smith shotgun. It was under the Hunter Arms banner, which flew from 1889 until 1945.

This is a Hunter Arms Fulton 2nd style in 12 ga with 30” barrels. The right barrel is full choke and the left is modified. The receiver exhibits those great cyanide case colors. Mechanically this old Fulton is in great condition. The bores are in excellent condition. The gun has around 90% of its original finish but it has nicks, dings and scratches. The half pistol grip stock has checkered cheeks and a checkered fore stock. There are some nicks in the butt stock and a piece of the butt stock chipped out on the right side adjacent to the tang (see photos). A talented professional could repair and restore this stock.

John Hunter Sr was also in the business of building Railroads and supplied railroads with Iron for rails and other metals, needed to build railroads. As gifts to these railroads many Hunter Arms L.C. Smith Coach Guns were gifted to the railroads, these guns were usually 12 gauge double guns, but not always. All had SN numbers most had short BBls. Because these L.C. Smith weapons were gifts to each individual railroad company, to entice further investments and purchases, many of the SN were not documented in the Hunter Arms shipping invoices. If you happen to see a short BBl L.C. Smith double gun, don't be real fast to write it off as a sawed waste of time, it could be a real nice coach gun.

[Good Morning: I had the opportunity to purchase a LC Smith 10 Gauge Hammer less Double Barrel Shotgun. This shotgun has 23 1/4 inch Damascus barrels. There are no makers mark or address on the barrel top side but the serial number 103157 on the receiver, bottom of the barrel, stock and forearm match the receiver numbers. There is also a O under the serial number. I have been checking every where I can and located the serial number puts a manufacture date of 1899. I have also located purchase orders and shipping invoices and it dose not show that my serial number was ever sold. I then checked further and was advised from a collector of LC Smiths out of California that the gifted shotguns did not have purchase orders or invoices. Does anyone know how to find out what railroad the shotguns were gifted to. I have had several Gunsmiths look at this shotgun and their professional option is that this is an original Coach Gun not a cut down field model. Any addition information and history would be appreciated. Thank You Tim

Unfortunately the Elsie Coach guns were gifted to many of the different railroads in that era, if you are very lucky the
Cody Museum might have some of the original manufacturing records. You might pay them to research their historical files. More than likely however you have a nice piece of Hunter Arms history that has no invoice available, and no sales
documents.

I located them on the net I will try to locate the site and post it. The site showed all the listed serial numbers that had been shipped. When I contacted them I gave them my serial number and they gave me the year it was manufactured but stated there are no records of it being purchased or shipped.
