Charles, thank you for this resource on Weymann instruments. I discovered your site while doing some research on my Weymann 225 ukulele-banjo number 37248. I just registered it on your serial number page. I purchased it from Alan Harris, a George Formby style player, instrument restorer, dealer, etc. Serial Number: 29047. The FAIRBANKS-VEGA TU-BA-PHONE Style M Tenor Banjos were first made in 1909. Note: My research shows the last TU-BA-PHONE banjos with the GRYPHON Head Design were made in 1918/1919. The highly ornate Vega Vox IV banjo with serial number #1969 was the final officially documented banjo manufactured by C. Martin in Nazareth, PA., circa 1978-79. The Vega Vox model was a 4 string gem that featured a brass tone ring. The resonator was hand-painted, and fancy engraved pearl inlays adorned the ebony fingerboard. Vega Serial Numbers. I have a Vega guitar with a serial number that would date it at 1919 according to the information above. But it has a typical Vega engraved pearl star in peg head with the word 'Vega' engraved in the star. My guess from looking at lots of photos of Vega mandolins, banjos, and mandolin banjos is that the word 'Vega' was not. About the banjo. 1930 Vega Vegaphone Professional 19 fret tenor banjo in pristine condition. All original with matching serial number on rim and perch pole dating the banjo at 1930. Beautiful sunburst finish to the neck and resonator with cadmium yellow celluloid side walls and maple bound pie-section to rear. Over 100 banjo chords in less than 10 minutes - Duration: 8:26. 1927 Vega Tubaphone Artist Tenor Banjo
Serial Number 72523
This incredible 88 year old Tenor Banjo is a fine example of just how much craftsmanship these instruments were made with. In addition to the perfection of construction and tone with the exclusive features found in all Vegaphones, the “Artist” has a hand-carved Neck, and is heavily gold plated and hand burnished on all exposed metal parts. Perfect for Irish, Dixieland or Traditional Jazz. This instrument was built for the professional who needed to look very good while on the job. The back has some wear spots, and the Perch Poll has been repaired where it joins the rim at the tail piece. Pics of this repair are included.
Choice curly maple hand-carved neck with a black veneer through center of neck to prevent warping. 3/16 inch ebony fingerboard with 19 nickel-silver frets and bound with white fiberloid. The fingerboard, back and front of peg head, and heel piece are inlaid with beautiful engraved pearl designs. These are still in amazing condition. Only the 3rd and 5th fret inlays have any significant wear. Finished in shaded amber brown and highly polished.
Vega Banjo Identification
Seven lap laminated rim with the patented Tubaphone tune tube and bracket band with brackets, hooks and ball end nuts. There are hidden details as well. Looking at the pictures, you’ll see that the rim has been lovingly assembled into a festive binding pattern. While not necessary, the builders sometimes did this as a point of pride-of-workmanship, a signature of sorts.
The Resonator is made of curly maple five ply, with an eight sectional design on the back and inlaid with blackwood. Finished in matching amber brown.
The elaborate tailpiece has 'Vegaphone - Artist - 115 Columbus Ave. - Boston' engravings. Comes with it’s case which fits very nicely. The case is solid, and a bit worn. Weight is 11lbs without case.
