In Mutant Football League, it’s not just scoring points that counts, as you can get brutal with your opponents, injuring and even killing opposing players. But, you’re not forced to just sit on the sidelines and watch after you’ve set up your team. A deep system for calling your team’s plays lets you decide what the best move is in each situation. Don’t expect fancy graphics in Front Office Football 8. This is a game about off-the-field management, and if that’s a part of football games you like, then there’s something here for you.

In Front Office Football 8, you play a general manager for the football team of your choice. You’ll pick your team through trades, free agency and an amateur draft. With your team in place, you can also come up with game plans, playbooks and depth charts. If you want, you can even call plays during the simulated games.

But, you have more to worry about than just how your team performs, as you’ll also manage things like ticket prices and stadium construction and upgrade plans to ensure you have a financially strong franchise. For a deep team management simulation, check this one out.

Best Old-School Madden: Madden NFL 2005

Backyard Football 2002 is a classic. It’s kid-friendly and pits incredibly cute child versions of several pro football players in friendly matches of football against one another and a whole host of other neighborhood kids. You can also make your own player join in the fun.

This game might be dated, but there’s still plenty to love. The cartoonish graphics have their own special appeal, especially if you’re a fan of old-school game graphics. And, with voiced announcers, there’s an added bit of character and charm to everything that happens on the field.

Despite its age and kiddy nature, it still plays like a proper football game. You’ll call the plays and control the action. It may take a little finagling to get the game running on a modern Windows PC, but Windows Compatibility Mode should be able to help.

By a show of hands, how many of you miss the EA Sports NCAA Football video game?

Legit tears have been shed in hopes of this game's return, a late-summer annual special that was the perfect elixir ahead of the real thing in September. NCAA Football 14 was the last of its kind to hit shelves in 2013 after disputes between EA Sports, the NCAA and individual trademark companies forced the gamemakers' hand.

Truthfully, we've got Ed O'Bannon to thank for ending the franchise, but we can dream, right?

Our own Ted Hyman, head of graphics at 247Sports, is a gamer and mega college football fan like the rest of us and supplied these dream-scenario cover images for individual teams if the game hit stores in July ahead of the 2018 season.

Remember: None of these cover guys would be playable since the game would theoretically release after they had left school. Enjoy!

If you thought Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins were fun to play with in previous NCAA Football installments, wait until you get to control Clemson's NFL-ready defensive line. Pick any of four players and it's a user sack waiting to happen. The days of simulating snaps on defense are over.

Let's try a new game mode in NCAA Football 19 with a speedster like Christian Kirk as the guinea pig — player lock during a kickoff and punt return where the user gets a field-level view to try and navigate his way through a wedge for a touchdown. Clever and challenging. Kirk wouldn't be in the 2018 installment, but you get the picture.

Speed kills and Oregon always has it. But let's not fool ourselves here — the real reason you choose the Ducks in NCAA Football is the team's wide range of uniform options. And five years from the last game, there would be an array of new choices.

Commonwealth Stadium in the Bluegrass has always looked extremely clean in NCAA Football with rotating shades of green every 5 yards and the Kentucky sky as the backdrop. Throw Benny Snell in the mix and that makes for a fun simulation.

The Men of Troy is not the team you want to play when you're finishing up a solo dynasty and you meet USC in a bowl game. We can see it now — developers have made USC quarterbacks ungodly talented, like always, somewhere in the 96 to 98 overall range.

You know when you find an unstoppable play and just keep running it? Tight end drag to Hayden Hurst. It would even work with South Carolina's current tight end, Jacob August. Thank us later. And if you could somehow incorporate the jet sweep in goal line situations, that would be outstanding.

Here's one of the more creative playbooks on the game, Gus Malzahn's zone-read heavy attack. The rushing options are always endless on the Plains and all have good video-game quickness.

Looking for a cover boy? You've found him. Throw power, throw accuracy, Baker Mayfield has no weaknesses. Running up the score on friends with Mayfield's arm would be a blast, but you'd have to do it in Legends mode since Mayfield is off to Cleveland.

Has there every been a perfect player on a video game? Madden Michael Vick comes to mind, but Saquon Barkley in an NCAA Football game would be close.

Would Derrius Guice have 99 speed? It's possible. High acceleration and broken tackle marks would make him a can't-miss player in the previous year's game.

Nothing like a bruising Notre Dame running back to pound your opponent into submission at the line of scrimmage. Turn fatigue off and you're guaranteed to get 200-plus.

Safe to say the hit stick was made for players like Derwin James, headhunters with no regard for human life. Locking on James in coverage in a previous installment and trying to out-jump your opponent would be scintillating.

Remember how tough it is trying to win with a 95 overall offense and an offense somewhere in the 80s? That's where we are with the Gators, who performed much better as a video game team with Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin.

Georgia is always loaded in the backfield on this game. As long as you don't get trigger happy with Jake Fromm, that should be a breeze offensively with the Bulldogs.

John Kelly is the type of player you can experiment with — different positions, updated playbooks, you name it. But you'll have to build the Vols through recruiting. Just get the ball into a speedster's hands, press turbo and let him do the rest.

Isn't it hard to dominate a video game with a linebacker? Not when that player is Malik Jefferson, who would likely be the Longhorns' highest-rated player on the game the previous season. User picks all day.

There's nothing like a user sack and that's something Michigan's pass rush can routinely provide. Swim move or bullrush off the line and you've got yourself a TFL. This dude would rip your friend's no-huddle to shreds.

Here's J.T. Barrett, a four-year starter who never lost to Michigan and shattered double-digit program records. Remember how good Troy Smith was in this game? Ohio State fans would love playing with Barrett, a similar athlete (at least on screen) in the previous year's game.
